Happy Valley Shanghai opened on August 16, 2009, and is one of the largest amusement parks in eastern China. The 860,000-square-meter park in Songjiang District is situated around a lake and, with its seven themed areas, offers fun for families and thrill-seekers alike. While the “Happy Ocean” area, with its gentle rides, is ideal for young children, the rest of the park is the heart of the roller coaster scene. The showpiece is the “Diving Coaster” in the Shanghai Beach area, which is set in the 1930s. This dive coaster hoists riders to a height of 65 meters, pauses briefly above the abyss, and plunges at a 90-degree angle in free fall—followed by a spectacular splash. In the “Happy Times” zone, China’s first large wooden roller coaster, the “ – Fireball,” awaits. Traveling at over 90 km/h, the train races along the wooden tracks, delivering plenty of weightlessness. For those who prefer even more speed, the “Shangri-la Woods” features the “Mega-Lite,” a steel roller coaster famous for its extremely rapid changes in direction and high G-forces just above the ground. The splash-filled water rides at “Typhoon Bay” provide a refreshing break. The experience is rounded out by Old West nostalgia in “Gold Mine Town” and live stunt shows. After dark, the multimedia water show “Water Curtain at the Sky” at the central lake combines water fountains, lasers, and music into a visually stunning finale.
