About the Park
Asakusa Hanayashiki is a hidden time capsule nestled in the heart of Tokyo’s historic Asakusa district, right next to the famous Senso-ji Temple. Founded in 1853 as a botanical flower garden, it is Japan’s oldest amusement park. Over the decades, the site has transformed into a nostalgic fairground that today exudes the pure retro charm of the 1950s. Since the park was built on an extremely compact area, the roughly 20 rides and stalls are packed closely together, creating a very special, cozy atmosphere. The undisputed centerpiece of the park is the “Roller Coaster.” It opened in 1953, making it the oldest still-operating roller coaster in the country. With a top speed of only about 42 km/h, this ride isn’t about extreme thrills but rather a unique experience: the tracks run just a hair’s breadth away from the colorful backdrops and residential buildings of the neighborhood. In addition to the roller coaster, the iconic, rideable panda cars and a classic Japanese haunted house define the scene. Hanayashiki deliberately avoids high-tech simulations, opting instead for tradition and a slower pace. This makes the park an oasis in modern Tokyo. It’s a perfect destination for families with young children, nostalgia enthusiasts, and all travelers who want to experience a piece of vibrant Japanese cultural history away from the massive mega-parks.
