Description
Among the darkest days for manned spaceflight, and especially for American spaceflight, are 28 January 1986, when seven astronauts from the Challenger mission lost their lives just 73 seconds after launch, and 1 February 2003, when the space shuttle Columbia broke up on re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere and the seven astronauts also lost their lives. This permanent exhibit commemorating the 14 brave astronauts features personal items of the astronauts and salvaged hardware from both missions, including a section of Challenger's left fuselage with the American flag and the frames of Columbia's cockpit windows.
