About the Park
The Czech city of Pilsen is located on the route between Nuremberg and Prague. Around 200 kilometres east of Nuremberg and around 100 kilometres west of the Czech capital Prague, the city is easily accessible. The botanical and zoological garden of the city of Pilsen is located on the northern outskirts, about 3 kilometres walking distance from the old town and was founded in 1926, making it the second oldest zoo in the Czech Republic. The botanical garden was added in 1957 and remained independent until 1981, when it was incorporated into the zoo. Also part of the zoo is Akva-Tera, an independent facility in the city centre that exhibits reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.
The zoo is 21ha in size, shared by just over 40 species of animals. Komodo dragons, armoured rhinos or even pygmy hippos are among the most interesting animals in the park. Particularly noteworthy are a 1 ha outdoor enclosure for brown bears, the underground world and a Madagascar house. A dinosaur park is also part of Zoo Plzeň's offer.
