About the Park
Less than 12 kilometres from the Polish border as the crow flies, the city of Ostrava is located on the Czech eastern border. Originally opened in the Kuncicky district in 1948 with an area of 6 ha as a nature park (not with attractions, but with recreational facilities such as sandpits and paddling pools), it moved about 6 kilometres further in 1951 and was transformed into a small zoo. Now 85 kilometres southwest of Katowice, Ostrava Zoo became a popular destination for visitors from the Czech Republic and Poland. In addition to Asian elephants, binturong and the Asian black bear, over 400 other animal species can be found at the zoo. In addition, visitors are also offered several routes of different lengths (467m to 904m) through the park's botanical garden.
