About the Park
In 1995, L'Aquàrium Barcelona opened in the old port of Barcelona, less than a thousand metres from Barcelona Zoo. In 2001, L'Aquàrium was extended by one floor to present permanent exhibitions to visitors. Around 450 different animal species live in 66 aquariums; the individual tanks represent the different habitats of the animals. The focus is on the Mediterranean and the tropical waters and especially the Great Barrier Reef. An 80-metre-long glassed-in underwater tunnel with a treadmill runs under the largest basin. Visitors can discover the importance of the oceans on earth with all their senses in the permanent exhibition in the Planeta Aqua room on 4,000 m2. And of course, visitors can discover piranhas, axolotls and lungfish in replica habitats here in the best aquarium in the Mediterranean, while friendly Humboldt penguins live in another zone.
