About the Park
The third oldest zoo in Switzerland has been welcoming visitors since 1929. On an area of 28 hectares (2020), which has almost doubled since 2006 from 15 hectares, there are over 375 species of animals that are native to the world. The enclosures are designed to be close to nature and offer the animals plenty of space. Animals that cannot be given the space they need are transferred to other zoos. The zoo is divided into several areas, including the 5.6-hectare Lewa Savannah, where giraffes and rhinos roam around baobab trees, the Masoala Rainforest with more than 40 species of vertebrates living together without barriers, and the Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park. It is particularly noteworthy that Zurich Zoo has successfully bred several Galapagos giant tortoises.
