About the Park
The Albanifest in Winterthur is the largest and oldest city festival in Winterthur and is even considered the largest annual old town festival in Europe. It is deeply rooted in the history of the city and has been celebrated since 1264.
Historical background:
The origins of the Albanifest date back to 1264, when on 22 June, the name day of Saint Albanus, the town of Winterthur received its charter of freedom with rights and duties from Rudolf of Habsburg. The renewal of the authorities traditionally took place around this date, and political business was combined with a festival at which food and drink were served to the citizens. Over the centuries, this ‘Albanitag’ developed into a celebration of Winterthur's freedom and community.
The festival today:
Today, the Albanifest is a huge public festival that takes place every year on the last weekend in June (usually from Friday to Sunday) and transforms the entire old town of Winterthur into a lively fairground. It is often referred to as the ‘Winterthur city festival of clubs and cultures’, as it is supported by numerous local clubs and organisations.
What can visitors expect?
- Catering and culinary delights: Over 70 catering establishments, 35 boulevard restaurants and more than 200 food stalls offer a huge selection of culinary delights from all over the world.
- Chilbi (amusement park): A large Chilbi with over 50 stalls and 35 rides provides fun and thrills for young and old. The Ferris wheel on the Neumarkt is a well-known landmark.
- Live music and entertainment: music bands and entertainment orchestras play on various stages, creating a great atmosphere.
- Chinder-Albani: A special area for children with age-appropriate attractions and entertainment, some of which are even free of charge.
