About the Park
Poland's third largest city, Wrocław, is home to the oldest zoo in Poland. It was opened in 1865 and is, by its own account, the largest zoo in the country. Well over 1,000 animal species are housed on an area of 33 hectares. In an international comparison, this large number of animal species places Wrocław Zoo in the top 5 of the "largest" zoos. The Afrykarium, which opened on 26 October 2014, is a special feature: it is not only Poland's first oceanarium, but also the largest (as of 2022). It is also the first oceanarium to focus on the African habitat and the flora and fauna of Africa. The zoo participates in more than 30 species conservation programmes; it is particularly proud of the Palawan rhinoceros, 90% of the world's population of which lives in Wrocław Zoo. The zoo also provides a suitably large area for brown bears, covering more than one hectare.
