About the Park
The oldest zoo in the world was opened on 31 July 1752. In its early days, the zoo, then called a menagerie, consisted of 12 enclosures and was commissioned by Emperor Franz I. The zoo's size grew over the years to 17 hectares. Over the years, the range of animals and the area grew to 17 hectares. In the middle of Vienna, right next to Schönbrunn Palace, only 7.5km as the crow flies from the Vienna Prater, over 2 million people enjoy visiting "Europe's best zoo" every year, which has already won the "Best European Zoo Award" several times. In magnificent adventure worlds - from the monkey, bird, rat or big cat house, through the rhino, giraffe and pet park, to the insectarium, desert, aquarium and terrarium house - visitors are surprised by almost 700 animal species with many thousands of animals. With its species conservation programmes, e.g. for the giant panda or the bald ibis, Schönbrunn Zoo regularly receives international attention.
