Woerden (NL) - Kermis

The Kermis Woerden is an annual folk festival deeply rooted in the traditions of the Dutch town, serving as an atmospheric programme leading up to the main day of the historic cattle market, the Koeiemart. It creates a lively, festive atmosphere in the town and is considered an integral, cheerful part of the overall celebrations. The fairground is located on the centrally located Exercitieveld, transforming this square into a colourful, bustling paradise that attracts people of all ages for the duration of the festival. The Kermis is closely linked to local customs and coincides with Snertweek (pea soup week), which celebrates the beginning of autumn and the return of the cows to their winter stables. The evening before the cattle market, known as ‘De Nacht van Woerden’, is a particularly big night of celebrations, with the fair forming part of the large city-wide programme of sporting competitions and gastronomic events that lasts late into the night. The fair offers both excitement and cosiness; guests can try their luck at various games and fortune-telling booths or simply enjoy the festive atmosphere. There is also a wide variety of culinary delights on offer, ranging from traditional sweet fairground treats to savoury snacks. The Kermis Woerden is therefore an important social event that brings the local population together to celebrate traditions and the changing seasons.
