About the Park
The Blijdorp Zoo is officially called the Royal Rotterdam Zoo and was opened in 1857, making it one of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands. Situated in the centre of Rotterdam, it borders on a festival site and is divided by a railway line into an eastern and a western part. The zoo, which is officially also a botanical garden, covers an area of 28 hectares. Because of this size, the zoo also has two entrances. While you can marvel at huge water lilies on the water, the interested animal viewer has a variety of over 180 animal species at his disposal. You will find Indian rhinos, Sumatran tigers and gorillas. The zoo also houses the Oceanium, where visitors can walk through a huge glass tunnel and observe fish, sharks and rays in a recreated habitat. For children, there is also the indoor playground Biotopia and the large outdoor playground Uwanja Kinderdschungel.
