About the Park
The Deventer Paaskermis is one of the most traditional and atmospheric Easter fairs in the Netherlands. It takes place annually on the spacious Platvoet fairground and marks the true beginning of spring for many people in the region. The fair in Deventer is characterised by a successful balance between a modern amusement park and the cosy, welcoming atmosphere of a historic Hanseatic city.
The visual appearance of the fairground is dominated by an impressive panorama of tall rides and brightly lit facades, which stir a sense of anticipation even from a distance. As soon as you enter the grounds, you are greeted by a symphony of light, music and the typical sounds of a fairground. It is a place where time seems to stand still for a few hours as you drift through the colourful alleys between the attractions. The architecture of the Kermis is designed to offer both wide, open spaces for the major spectacles and more intimate nooks for traditional fairground stalls.
In Deventer, particular emphasis is placed on family-friendliness. The Kermis is a cross-generational meeting place where social interaction and shared experiences take centre stage. An integral part of the concept is the respectful consideration of visitors’ diverse needs. This is evident, for example, in the provision of low-stimulus time slots, during which acoustic and visual stimuli are reduced to ensure a pleasant and inclusive fair experience for everyone – regardless of their sensitivity to stimuli.
The culinary side of the Paaskermis is deeply rooted in Dutch tradition. The aroma of freshly baked poffertjes, savoury snacks and sweet candyfloss is an integral part of the overall experience. It is these sensory impressions, combined with the warm atmosphere and the pride of Deventer’s citizens in their fair tradition, that make the festival a distinctive cultural highlight of the year. The Deventer Paaskermis is thus far more than just a place of entertainment; it is a celebration of joie de vivre and community that brings people together every year at Easter time.
