About the Park
Burgers’ Zoo opened in 1913 on a total area of 45 hectares, with approximately 18 hectares dedicated to the zoo itself. Originally located about 35 km away, the zoo reopened ten years later at its current site. In 1968, the “Safari” area opened for the first time in continental Europe, representing a novelty in the viewing of exotic animals. Safari parks are typically explored by bus or car, but this has changed over time. Today, the animals can be viewed and observed in their habitats from designated viewing points. Of particular note are the so-called “ecodisplays”: these are recreations of ecosystems where plants and animals coexist in nature. This allows for a more realistic viewing experience than in traditional zoos with enclosures. Burgers Zoo is divided into the areas “Burgers’ Safari,” “Bush,” “Mangrove,” “Desert,” “Ocean,” and “Rimba.”
