About the Park
Tokyo's Taitō district is home to Japan's first modern zoo, the Ueno Zoological Garden. Opened in 1882, the zoo is home to more than 3,000 animals from over 300 different species on an area of 14.3 hectares. In addition to Asian elephants, Sumatran tigers, western lowland gorillas, Hokkaido brown bears, ibis, Japanese macaques, black-handed spider monkeys, prairie dogs and American bison, visitors can also see giant pandas, black rhinos, hippos, pygmy hippos, giraffes, aye-ayes, bats, armadillos, Galapagos tortoises, saltwater crocodiles, green iguanas, geckos, Japanese pond turtles and other animals in the various areas of the zoo. The Ueno Zoo is open all year round and of course also offers food and drink at its various stalls and restaurants. As the flagship of Japanese zoos, the Ueno Zoological Garden should not be missed when visiting Tokyo.
