Arakawa Amusement Park / あらかわ遊園

Arakawa Amusement Park is a charming, historic amusement park in northern Tokyo and is considered the only municipally operated amusement park within the 23 special wards. Opened as early as 1922, the park—located directly on the Sumida River—looks back on over a century of history. Following a comprehensive modernization, the park now combines modern, safe standards with a nostalgic retro atmosphere, making it a perfect destination for families with young children. Away from the large crowds of tourists, the compact grounds offer a relaxing oasis in the heart of the metropolis. Among the most famous attractions is the 40-meter-tall Ferris wheel, which offers an impressive view of the Tokyo Skytree and, on clear days, even as far as Mount Fuji. Another landmark is the Family Coaster, officially recognized as Japan’s slowest roller coaster, which provides young explorers with a gentle first ride experience. The offerings are rounded out by a pedal-powered elevated train, a small railway, and a lovingly designed petting zoo with goats and capybaras. A cozy café, housed in a historic streetcar from 1929, invites visitors to linger. Thanks to its municipal management, the park is one of the most affordable recreational options in all of Tokyo and is easily accessible via the historic Tokyo Sakura Tram.
