Tours (F) - Fête Foraine

The Fête Foraine de Tours (often referred to as the Foire de Tours) is one of the largest and most important funfairs in France. Every year in May, the Parc des Expositions (Rochepinard) exhibition centre is transformed into a huge, brightly lit amusement park that attracts visitors from across the Loire Valley and far beyond. With over 100 attractions, including gigantic rides that are visible from afar, it is a real spectacle for adrenaline junkies and families alike.

What makes the Fête Foraine in Tours so special is its enormous size and the mix of modern high-tech action and traditional French fairground flair. While the latest ‘Grand Frisson’ rides (rides offering maximum thrills) catapult visitors to dizzying heights, the classic shooting galleries, lottery stands and typical manèges (carousels) offer the charm of days gone by. The fair usually takes place at the same time as the large Foire de Tours trade fair, turning the entire area into a vibrant centre of enjoyment, commerce and entertainment.

The culinary side is an indispensable part of the experience. The smell of freshly fried churros, croustillons (small doughnuts) and barbe à papa (candyfloss) fills the air. A local classic often found at French funfairs are savoury galettes or candied apples (pommes d'amour). When the sun sets over the Loire, the square is transformed into a seemingly endless sea of lights, accompanied by the typical, energetic funfair music that perfectly completes the special ‘fête’ atmosphere.
