Saint-Malo (F) - Fête Foraine de la Sainte-Ouine

In the historic port city of Saint-Malo on the Breton coast, the Fête Foraine de la Sainte-Ouine is a real institution. It traditionally takes place in winter, usually from mid-January to mid-February, bringing colour and warmth to the cold season. What makes this fair so special is its spectacular location: the rides and stalls are set up right at the foot of the imposing city walls, known as the Intra-Muros, and along the Quai Saint-Vincent.

The name ‘Sainte-Ouine’ dates back to a centuries-old tradition that was originally associated with a pilgrimage and a market. Today, the festival has developed into one of the largest fairs in western France. The backdrop is unique in the world, as you can enjoy breathtaking views of the historic fortified city and the often stormy sea of the Emerald Coast while riding the Ferris wheel or the fast-paced rides.

The atmosphere is characterised by the rough sea breeze, which mixes with the sweet smell of galettes-saucisses, crêpes and the typical ‘croustillons’. Despite the winter temperatures, it attracts thousands of people who meet between the colourful lights and modern attractions. It is a festival that combines the pride of the Malouins in their seafaring history with the pure joie de vivre of a large folk festival, transforming the harbour into a vibrant light show for several weeks.
