Colmar (F) - La Magie de Noël

The Magic of Christmas in Colmar is actually a collection of five thematically different Christmas markets that blend harmoniously into the picturesque old town. During Advent, the historic centre, characterised by its half-timbered houses, canals and narrow streets, is bathed in enchanting lighting that highlights the architectural details of the Renaissance buildings and the festive decorations of the town houses. The lighting is designed to guide visitors along a path of lights from one market to the next.

The five markets, each with its own character, are strategically located in the main squares:

- Marché de la Place des Dominicains: This market is located in front of the impressive Dominican monastery and is characterised by its festive and traditional atmosphere, often with a focus on nativity scenes and decorations.

- Marché de la Place Jeanne d'Arc: Here, the focus is on Alsatian Christmas traditions. You will find regional handicrafts and, above all, famous Alsatian specialities such as Bredeles (Christmas cookies), Kugelhopf and hearty dishes.

- Marché de la Place de l'Ancienne Douane (Koïfhus): Located in the heart of the old town, this market offers high-quality arts and crafts, often in and around the historic Koïfhus building, which itself houses additional exhibitors.

- Marché Gourmand de la Place de la Cathédrale: Specialising in food, this market offers a wide selection of culinary delicacies and gourmet dishes from local chefs and restaurateurs in festive huts.

- Marché des Enfants de la Petite Venise: Dedicated to children, this market offers a carousel, toys and activities in the fairytale setting of the Little Venice district.

The houses in Colmar's old town are elaborately decorated for the occasion, often with teddy bears, bows and fairy lights, adding to the picture-postcard atmosphere. During the Christmas season, festively decorated boats often sail on the canal. A special highlight is the singing of the children on the boats, who carry their songs through the city centre. The combination of history, architecture and the lovely Christmas decorations makes the Colmar market one of the most charming in Europe.
