About the Park
Lapland borders directly on the northernmost part of the Baltic Sea and lies in the centre of Finland. Ranua is a good two hours' drive north of Oulu, and the journey from Rovaniemi to Ranua takes only about an hour. The route takes you along the E75 motorway and highway 78, which has been home to Finland's northernmost zoo, Ranua Zoo / Seuraa Ranua Resortia, since 1983. Ranua Zoo covers an area of around 57 hectares and offers a unique opportunity to observe the wildlife of the north. It is embedded in a large forest area and has large game enclosures. All the animals can be observed very well on a 2.8 km long path, which consists mainly of wooden paths and bridges. 50 different animal species live in the zoo, mainly from the Arctic region. These include polar bears, arctic foxes, reindeer, wolves, lynxes and many other animals that are kept in a natural environment.
