About the Park
The Neptune Festival in Zarrentin am Schaalsee is one of the most traditional and popular events in western Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Located in the heart of the UNESCO Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve, the festival uses the picturesque backdrop of the deep, clear lake and historic monastery complex to build a bridge between regional customs and modern entertainment.
The festival grounds cover the entire lake promenade and the adjacent meadows on the bathing beach. This creates a spacious festival area that attracts tens of thousands of visitors from the region and the nearby metropolitan areas of Hamburg and Schwerin. The special topography of Zarrentin allows the festivities to take place both on land and on water, giving the event an extraordinary dynamic.
The heart of the festival is the fairground area, which stretches along the shore. Here, visitors will find a varied selection of rides, ranging from the classic Ferris wheel with a view over Lake Schaalsee to modern attractions for adrenaline junkies. The combination of the colourful lights of the fairground stalls and the reflective surface of the lake creates an almost magical atmosphere, especially in the evening hours, which is further enhanced by the natural beauty of the surroundings.
In terms of cuisine, the Neptune Festival is all about the region. The whitefish, the characteristic fish of Lake Schaal, plays a central role and is smoked or fried on site. These local specialities are complemented by the classic offerings of a large funfair, so visitors can choose between traditional fisherman's cuisine and modern street food options.
The eponymous highlight is the visit of Neptune and his entourage. During this traditional ceremony, which often begins on the water, the so-called ‘baptism’ takes place, in which selected guests are symbolically welcomed into the realm of the sea god. The festival usually culminates in a large fireworks display over the lake or an impressive laser show that transforms the water and sky into a spectacular sea of lights. With its mix of maritime customs, a high-quality funfair and its unique location in a nature reserve, the Neptune Festival has firmly established itself as one of the most popular and identity-forming events in northern Germany.
