About the Park

The Ascension Fair in Witten is one of the most traditional and popular fair events in the Ennepe-Ruhr district. As the first major fair of the year in Witten, it marks the start of the open-air season and makes use of the spacious area in front of the Saalbau building and parts of the adjacent city centre. With space for around 50 to 60 showmen's businesses, the fairground offers a compact but high-calibre festival mile that bridges the gap between the urban centre and the green surrounding area. Over the five days of the fair, from Wednesday to Sunday, the event regularly attracts between 40,000 and 60,000 visitors who enjoy the special atmosphere in the Ruhr city.

The atmosphere in Witten is characterised by a mixture of family warmth and the typical hustle and bustle of a large folk festival. The Saalbauplatz is transformed into a modern amusement park, where spectacular rides that tower above the Witten skyline alternate with traditional classics. The fair is particularly appreciated for its high density of attractions in a comparatively small space, which creates a particularly intense experience. For families, the fair also offers numerous child-friendly carousels and game stalls, which are harmoniously integrated into the overall picture and ensure sparkling eyes among the little guests.

The Ascension Fair also remains true to Westphalian culinary tradition and offers a rich selection of delicacies. In addition to hearty classics such as currywurst and potato pancakes, typical fairground treats such as roasted almonds and toffee apples are a must. Several cosy beer gardens invite visitors to linger and serve as a social meeting place for the entire town. An integral part and the emotional highlight is the large fireworks display, which traditionally lights up the sky above Witten. When the lights of the rides shine against the evening sky at dusk, it becomes clear why this festival has had a firm place in the heart of the region for generations.
