About the Park

The German-American Friendship Festival in Wiesbaden is considered one of the most important intercultural events in Hesse and is a fixed fixture in the state capital's calendar of events. It is much more than a traditional folk festival; it is a logistical masterpiece that takes place annually on the grounds of the US garrison at Hainerberg, directly adjacent to New York Street.

The festival grounds cover an impressive area of several hectares, which is made fully accessible to the public during the festival days. The dimensions are chosen so that there is room for a huge fairground with over 60 different showmen and catering establishments. In recent years, visitor numbers have regularly exceeded 100,000, with peak numbers expected on particularly busy weekends. This enormous response makes it one of the most visited festivals of its kind in Germany and underlines the deep roots of the US armed forces in Wiesbaden's urban society.

The fairground aspect of the festival is in no way inferior to that of a large German funfair. The selection of rides ranges from family-friendly classics such as the Ferris wheel, which offers a sweeping view of the barracks grounds and the city, to state-of-the-art high-tech attractions that provide adrenaline rushes. Bumper cars, a music express and various walk-through attractions form the backbone of the amusement mile, while numerous game booths invite visitors to try their hand at dart throwing or duck fishing. What sets this fair apart from others, however, is the integration of American entertainment elements, such as demonstrations of US sports and performances by military bands, which provide a unique backdrop between the rides.

In terms of cuisine, the festival offers a depth that goes beyond the usual fare. The size of the site allows for the construction of massive BBQ stations where meat is prepared over an open fire according to original recipes from the southern states. Visitors can discover the enormous variety of US cuisine, ranging from hearty burgers with original American cheese to sweet temptations such as candy apples and freshly fried doughnuts. In addition to local Hessian beer, the beverage stands often offer American classics, completing the intercultural exchange on a taste level.

A significant part of the organisation is devoted to security and infrastructure. As the festival takes place on active military grounds, the logistical effort required to ensure that everything runs smoothly for the tens of thousands of guests is enormous. Security checks are thorough, but routine for the people of Wiesbaden, who value the festival as a safe place for families. The grand finale is traditionally a gigantic fireworks display, often timed to coincide with 4 July, US Independence Day. This spectacle is one of the largest fireworks displays in the region and attracts thousands of additional spectators who gather outside the grounds to watch the light show above the Hainerberg.
