About the Park
The Sababurg Zoo is located 45 kilometres west of Göttingen and 40 kilometres north of Kassel. It was opened in 1973, but has more than 440 years of history behind it, making it one of the oldest zoological institutions in Europe. Visitors will find around 80 animal species on an area of more than 130ha. The zoo is divided into three areas: In the primeval game park, animals threatened with extinction as well as native wild animal species, such as Heck cattle, are kept. Visitors will also find bison or European lynx. In the Archepark, visitors can see old domestic and farm animal breeds that have become economically insignificant for our agriculture. And in the children's zoo, which appeals especially to children, animals are to be experienced up close. Petting facilities for Tasmanian Bennett wallabies (kangaroos) or calico cats have been set up for this purpose.
