About the Park
The town of Alsdorf is located around 15 kilometres north of the westernmost German city of Aachen. It is a medium-sized regional town and centre in the North Rhine-Westphalian city region of Aachen and was a mining town until the end of the 20th century. The Alsdorfer Weiher zoo was opened here for the first time in 1967 at the instigation of Helmut Eckert, the former mayor of Alsdorf. Under the motto "Feed, stroke, marvel, play and relax!", the zoo promises recreation and entertainment for the whole family. With an animal population of around 30 species and around 300 animals housed in spacious enclosures, play areas invite you to rest and run around. The animal park also includes a leisure area with a climbing playground with a climbing pyramid and a climbing frame (between 1973 and 2017, the Anna 9 steam locomotive of the Eschweiler Bergwerks-Verein was parked here). The special feature of this zoo is that it is free to visit, making it one of the few zoological facilities in the world (and the only one in the Euregio).
