About the Park
The Sylt Aquarium – insights into the fascinating underwater world
The Sylt Aquarium is located in Westerland, on the popular North Sea island of Sylt. It offers visitors exciting insights into the marine worlds of the North Sea and exotic tropical oceans. The aquarium was opened in 2004 and has been a popular destination for families, school groups and nature lovers ever since.
Layout and exhibition
The Sylt Aquarium is home to around 25 lovingly designed tanks with over 1,000 animals from more than 100 different species. The exhibition is divided into two main areas:
North Sea area: Here, visitors can observe typical inhabitants of the North German coastal waters, including starfish, crabs, flatfish, sea bass and even small sharks. The tanks are modelled on natural habitats and give an authentic impression of the local underwater world.
Tropical area: This part of the aquarium displays colourful fish and coral reefs from tropical regions. Here you can encounter clownfish, surgeonfish, moray eels and seahorses, among others. The large ocean tank, through which a glass tunnel leads, is particularly impressive – allowing the animals to swim up close and around the visitors.
Special features and offers
One of the aquarium's highlights is the glass tube tunnel, which offers a 360-degree view of the largest tank – an unforgettable experience for young and old alike. In addition to the exhibition, the aquarium also offers interactive learning stations, information boards, a small café and a souvenir shop.
There are exciting hands-on activities for children and occasional special events such as themed tours, feeding times and holiday programmes.
Environmental protection and education
The Sylt Aquarium attaches great importance to environmental protection and education. It provides information about the dangers to marine life posed by environmental pollution, climate change and overfishing. In this way, it actively contributes to environmental education and raises awareness among its visitors about the importance of protecting the oceans.
