The Stuttgart Christmas Market is not only one of the largest, but also one of the most traditional Christmas markets in Europe, with roots dating back to the late 17th century. It stretches across several central squares in the city centre, including Schlossplatz, Schillerplatz, Karlsplatz and Marktplatz, like a sparkling sea of lights.

The market owes its special appeal to the elaborate and lovingly crafted decorations of its approximately 300 stalls. Instead of a uniform style, each stall is individually decorated by its operators with unique roof decorations, which are often small works of art and range thematically from fantastic fairy-tale scenes to Christmas motifs. This decoration competition gives the market an unmistakable, fairy-tale flair.

In addition to the wide range of handicrafts and regional specialities such as mulled wine, bratwurst and gingerbread, the market offers an extensive programme of events for the whole family. On Schlossplatz, a large children's fairy tale land with nostalgic carousels, a real mini steam train to ride on and a children's bakery invites visitors to linger. Musical performances, often including daily concerts and the traditional tower brass band on the town hall steps, provide atmospheric background music.

The Christmas experience is complemented by the ‘Glanzlichter Stuttgart’ (Stuttgart Highlights) on Schlossplatz, a spectacular light installation that showcases modern sculptures of city landmarks and delights visitors with a light and sound show. The harmonious combination of historical tradition, detailed design and large-scale light artworks attracts millions of visitors to the Stuttgart Christmas market every year.
