St. Wendel - Weihnachtsmarkt & Mittelaltermarkt

The St. Wendel Christmas and Medieval Market is one of the most atmospheric and popular markets in south-west Germany. The historic old town of St. Wendel is transformed into an enchanting setting that combines traditional Christmas magic with an authentic medieval atmosphere.

A particular highlight is the elaborately designed medieval village. Here, craftsmen such as blacksmiths, woodturners, potters and rope-makers demonstrate their traditional skills. Jugglers, musicians, fire-eaters and bards wander through the alleyways, providing entertainment just as they would have done in the late Middle Ages. An absolute crowd-puller is the daily Oriental caravan: Every afternoon, a procession of life-size wooden camel replicas, led by the Three Wise Men and colourfully dressed herdsmen, makes a festive parade through the town.

Even beyond the medieval area, the market offers numerous attractions. A huge, lovingly designed nativity scene exhibition showcases woodcarvings from all over the world, and the metre-high pyramid towers above the festival grounds. Younger visitors can look forward to a real dwarf world, nostalgic carousels and a toboggan run with real snow.

For the palate, there is a mix of classic Christmas fare and hearty medieval grilled specialities. From mead in earthenware jugs to grilled game specialities and wood-fired flatbreads, right through to winemaker’s mulled wine, the culinary offering is vast.
