About the Park
The Speyer Pretzel Festival is a public festival in the city of Speyer that takes place every year on the second weekend in July from Thursday to Tuesday.
History
The festival was initiated by the Speyer Tourist Association to promote the sales of Speyer's breweries, pretzel bakers and tobacco manufacturers and was first held in 1910. Today, it is one of the largest public festivals on the Upper Rhine and attracts 300,000 visitors over four days. Over time, numerous accompanying events were added: a parade with over 100 fanfare processions, clubs, groups and floats, from which around 22,000 pretzels are thrown among the people, the ‘Brezelfestlauf’ (with an international race over 8,200 metres), tournaments and competitions as well as fireworks at the end on Tuesday.
Curious world records are repeatedly set during the festival. In 2014, for example, the longest lederhosen and dirndl polonaise was achieved with 2679 participants. In 2016, a dance floor formed by ten lorries was moved more than 600 metres from the Altpörtel to the cathedral and then to the festival site using only muscle power.
Since 2002, Speyer has maintained relations with the pretzel partner town of Kirchhellen, where a pretzel festival is also celebrated every three years.
