Schwerin - Weihnachtsmarkt

The Schwerin Christmas Market, which operates under the motto ‘The Star in the North’, transforms the historic old town of the state capital into an extensive, festive wonderland. The event extends across several central squares and streets, including the Old Town Market, the Butchers' Market, Mecklenburgstraße, Schloßstraße and areas on the southern shore of the Pfaffenteich.

The centrepiece is the Old Town Market in front of the imposing brick cathedral, where a huge Christmas tree decorated with countless lights stands. This square is the main meeting place and hosts the large Christmas stage with a varied daily programme. Santa Claus holds his daily consultation hours here, which is a particular highlight for younger visitors. There is also a nostalgic carousel and a Christmas nativity scene.

The market is characterised by its atmospheric backdrop of bright half-timbered houses and lovingly decorated shop windows. Along the promenades, numerous wooden huts offer traditional handicrafts, including glassblowers and potters, as well as a wide range of culinary delights, from roasted almonds and Mutzen to mulled wine.

The Schlachtermarkt is a special attraction for families. It has a separate area for children, which often includes a craft and adventure tent as well as musical entertainment such as the popular Eisbärenband. Another highlight of the Schwerin Christmas market is the large ice rink, which often remains open until January and invites visitors to go ice skating. The entire city is aglow with lights, which atmospheric underscore the historic atmosphere of Mecklenburg's capital city.
