Sangerhausen - Kobermännchenfest

The Kobermännchen Festival is the largest folk festival in the town of Sangerhausen and a significant event in the South Harz region. It is a fascinating mixture of historical town festival, lively funfair and diverse cultural programme.

The name of the festival derives from an old legend that is deeply rooted in the mining tradition of the region. A small, legendary creature known as the ‘Kobermännchen’ is said to have helped the miners by placing ore in their baskets (known as ‘Koben’), but made itself invisible when they tried to find it. Today, this figure is the official symbol of the town and the festival and is honoured during the celebrations.

The festival extends across the entire city centre of Sangerhausen and offers a wide range of attractions for all ages:

- Grand parade: The absolute highlight is the historical parade on Sunday. This parade is not only a visual spectacle, but also tells the history of the city and the legend of the Kobermännchen in elaborate, creative performances. Many local clubs and groups take part.

- Funfair and fair: The Kobermännchenfest funfair is a major attraction. There are a variety of rides on the fairground and in Dr.-Wilhelm-Külz-Straße, from fast-paced attractions to family-friendly carousels.

- Diverse stage programme: Live music, dance performances and other cultural shows are offered throughout the day on several stages, including the market square. The musical spectrum ranges from brass band music and pop songs to rock and pop.

- Special markets: The festival grounds are often complemented by themed markets, such as the ‘market of beautiful things’, where artisans offer their handmade products.

- Grand opening: The opening of the festival is an important traditional event, which begins on Friday evening with the mayor tapping the first barrel of beer.

- Sunday shopping: On Sunday, the shops in the city centre invite visitors to come and shop, often with special promotions and offers.
