Rodenkirchen - Roonkarker Mart

The Roonkarker Mart (Low German for Rodenkirchen market) is a fair in the village of Rodenkirchen (municipality of Stadland, Lower Saxony).

It is the largest and oldest fair in the district of Wesermarsch and is well known beyond the district boundaries. The market is attended by around 200 showmen and vendors every year, usually including 13 large rides.

History:

The origins of the Roonkarker Markt are not exactly known. It is assumed that a church festival was the origin of this market. At such a festival, there is said to have been a stalls and cattle market, which was held directly at the Rodenkirchen church until the 18th century, before it moved to the market square where it is still held today.

In 1933, the 800th Roonkarker Mart was celebrated - although there is no concrete evidence as to whether this actually corresponds to the facts. Instead, the foundation of the church in 1131 (also not documented) was apparently taken as the basis. Absences during the First World War and the Second World War were not taken into account. The market was then held annually from 1946 to 2019 and paused during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and 2021. This method of counting has been retained to this day, meaning that the 887th Roonkarker Mart will officially be celebrated in 2022. In 2018, the market had over 200,000 visitors.
