Rees - Kirmes

Every year, on the last weekend in September, the Rees funfair takes place in the historic town centre of Rees from Saturday to Tuesday. Starting at the bus station ‘Vor dem Delltor’, the funfair stretches along Dellstraße to the market square in front of the town hall. Numerous showmen present attractive children's and big rides, as well as stalls with a wide range of food and drink.

The absolute highlight is the large firework display, which traditionally begins at around 9 pm on Tuesdays.

Around 80 showmen and women take part in the annual funfair in the centre of Rees with a wide variety of rides and food stalls.

The Rees funfair (Michaeliskirmes) was first mentioned in 1241. The then Archbishop Konrad von Hochstaden authorised the population to hold three open-air fairs between May and the day before St Michael's Day. As a result, the Rees autumn fair traditionally takes place on the last weekend in September and, according to old tradition, must end before 1 October. It is also an old tradition that ‘green herring’ is offered at the market held on the Wednesday after the fair.
