Osnabrück - Weihnachtsmarkt

The historic Christmas market in Osnabrück is considered one of the most beautiful and atmospheric Christmas markets in northern Germany. It owes its special appeal to the unique backdrop of Osnabrück's old town, where it stretches impressively between the historic market square and St. Peter's Cathedral. The entire scene is embedded in medieval architecture, consisting of the Town Hall of the Peace of Westphalia and St. Mary's Church, whose illumination in the glow of lights creates a particularly festive and contemplative atmosphere. Two main attractions significantly characterise the historical flair of the market: the Telsemeyer family's traditional carousel, which is over 100 years old and stands in front of the town hall, and the world's largest functioning music box with its life-size figures, which can be found at the theatre. In addition, the largest nutcracker at a Christmas market, measuring six metres in height, can often be admired. A festive ritual is celebrated every day when a door of the Advent calendar is opened at the historic city scales in the late afternoon, while on Wednesdays the brass players of the St. Marien trombone choir play Christmas carols from the church tower. The market offers a mixture of traditional stalls selling high-quality handicrafts, regional specialities and Christmas decorations. In addition to the main market, the Christmas experience is enhanced by smaller offshoots in the city centre, such as the ice magic at Nikolaiort.
