Nottuln - Martinimarkt

It is as much a part of Nottuln as the curia buildings are of the historic town centre. The St Martin's Market, which has been held every year at the beginning of November since 1622, is a firm fixture in the annual calendar of the abbey village.

The Martinimarkt takes place on the first or second weekend in November, always from Saturday to Monday.

It is a colourful mixture of funfair, market, arts and crafts village behind St Martin's Church, many activities organised by local clubs and churches as well as an open Sunday from 1 pm to 6 pm.

Traditionally, the Martinimarkt begins on Friday with the opening evening organised by the local heritage association, to which a prominent speaker is always invited to talk about a current topic.

Early Friday evening, on the other hand, is dedicated to the market's patron saint. A lantern procession for children takes place in honour of Saint Martin (meeting point is at 6 pm at the Pastorat, Kirchplatz 7), culminating in the St Martin's play, which takes place in the schoolyard of the secondary school. At the end, the children receive a Martin's pretzel from the Martini Brotherhood, the organisers of the parade and Martin's play.

This also has a long tradition in Nottuln.

The funfair, market and arts and crafts village are officially opened on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm. This will take place at the Heitmann organ, which is located near the large fountain by the church.
