Neuss-Furth - Volks- und Heimatfest

Volks- und Heimatfest Neuss-Furth: A festival of tradition and community

The Volks- und Heimatfest in Neuss-Furth, often referred to as the Schützenfest Neuss-Furth, is a deeply rooted traditional festival that is celebrated annually around Whitsun.

This lively event is largely organised and shaped by the local shooting clubs, with the St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft Neuss-Furth e.V. playing a central role. Various groups within the brotherhood, such as the Scheibenschützen Neuss-Furth 1932 and the Schützenlust Neuss Furth von 1891 e.V. society, actively participate in the varied programme.

The main attractions and traditional components of the festival typically include

- Funfair: a lively funfair on St.-Sebastianus-Platz, offering entertainment for all ages.

- Parades and processions: Magnificent parades, where the marksmen in their traditional uniforms are accompanied by marching bands, are a highlight. The torchlight procession is a particularly atmospheric event.

- Marksmen's rituals: The festival is rich in marksmen's traditions, including the King's Honour (honouring the king of marksmen and other dignitaries), the Löhnungsappell (a ceremonial roll call) and various shooting competitions. The construction of elaborate torches (torch building) is an important preparatory activity that is carried out with great dedication.

- Church services: A festive high mass is an integral part of the celebrations and reflects the historical connection between the shooting community and the church.

- Social events: The marquee serves as a central meeting point for numerous social gatherings, including dances with live music, providing opportunities to strengthen community and celebrate. Certain corps within the Schützenbruderschaft, such as the equestrian corps, can also organise their own traditional events such as the Ringstechen.

- "Marschbefehl": The official timetable and marching order for the participating shooting groups, which sets out the times and locations of the various ceremonial events.

The history of the Volks- und Heimatfest in Neuss-Furth goes back many decades, with the St. Sebastianus Schützenbruderschaft Neuss-Furth itself being founded in 1932. The festival has a long tradition of being celebrated around Whitsun, although it has experienced interruptions and resumptions due to historical events, which emphasises its resilience and importance to the local community.

The Volks- und Heimatfest Neuss-Furth is a major cultural event in the region, showcasing local customs, fostering community spirit and providing a joyful experience for residents and visitors alike.
