Neumünster - Holstenköste

The Holstenköste in Neumünster is one of the largest and most traditional town festivals in the whole of Schleswig-Holstein, transforming the entire city centre into a huge festival area every June. Centred around the Großflecken, the Gänsemarkt and the Kleinflecken, this four-day major event regularly attracts around two hundred thousand visitors, who come together to celebrate and enjoy the varied programme.

The festival offers a colourful mix of fairground attractions, live music, sport and tradition. On several stages spread across the site, numerous bands and DJs create a lively atmosphere with rock, pop, schlager, jazz and party music. At the same time, fairground operators provide that classic fairground feel with a range of classic and modern rides, from the Ferris wheel to adrenaline-fuelled attractions. There is plenty on offer in terms of food and drink too: alongside the traditional fairground stalls, there is a dedicated food truck area as well as the cosy monastery garden on the monastery island, which serves as a family-friendly beer garden.

Things get sporty with the integrated Holstenköstenlauf, in which runners of all ages compete over various distances through the city, from the Bambini run to the main race. On the final day of the festival, part of the site is transformed into a huge flea market for bargain hunters early in the morning. The programme is rounded off by an ADAC classic car rally, the traditional Kösten boxing and an ecumenical service. As the city centre is largely closed to motorised traffic, visitors are advised to travel by public transport or use large car parks outside the city centre.
