Similar to the carnival for Cologne, the autumn market is a highlight for Mölln that delights young and old alike.

The streets and squares of the old town are closed off to make room for dizzying fairground rides, delicious lard pastries and barbecued delicacies. It's a journey back in time, where nostalgia meets modernity. Despite the current building site in the town centre, the organisers try to set up as many stalls as possible by cleverly extending the area.

A long tradition

The autumn market was first mentioned in a document in 1561. Goods were mainly sold at this time, but entertainment with actors and jugglers also played a role. Historians assume that the market was already being held in Mölln over 800 years ago. The treasury played an important role in this, as they lent the weights for weighing their goods to ‘foreign tradesmen, grocers and confectioners’, thereby improving the town's coffers.

In the 19th century, sour meat with Mölln rusks was a popular fair food and it was explicitly pointed out that sufficient drinks should be available. On autumn market days, school lessons were cancelled both in Mölln and in neighbouring towns such as Ratzeburg. Even at this time, numerous entertainment offers such as Moritatensänger, waxworks, Hau den Lukas and much more attracted visitors.

The Mölln autumn market is still popular with showmen today, but especially with visitors. It is therefore not surprising that the organisers from the town of Mölln attach particular importance to presenting attractive and changing rides and stalls.
