Markgröningen - Schäferlauf

It is certainly one of the biggest attractions in southern Germany - the Markgröninger Schäferlauf. Its roots go back to the 16th century and its ingenious mixture of tradition and folk festival with modern elements fascinates around 100,000 visitors every year at the end of August.

The main attraction of the festival is undoubtedly the race of the (real) shepherds over a distance of 300 paces - barefoot across the stubble field. The shepherd's dance is known far beyond the country's borders. The festival play ‘Der treue Bartel’ (The Faithful Bartel) inspires many visitors with a professional theatre performance in several performances. Another attraction worth seeing is the festival parade with over 50 groups.

Over four days, Markgröningen offers a unique festival experience: markets with around 150 stalls, modern and highly attractive fairground rides, a wide range of international cuisine and music at every turn provide the framework for an unforgettable and incomparable visit to the folk festival. Day and night, for young and old.
