Lünen - Himmelfahrtskirmes

The Lüner Himmelfahrtskirmes is one of the most traditional and popular folk festivals in the region and transforms the city centre into a lively fairground every May. The festival extends across Pfarrer-Bremer-Platz and the theatre car park, giving the fair a compact yet very varied atmosphere. It is deeply rooted in the consciousness of the town's residents and for many marks the actual start of the open-air season, as it always takes place around Ascension Day weekend.

What makes this fair so special is its successful combination of church tradition and modern fairground excitement. The event kicks off on Ascension Day in classic style with an ecumenical service held directly on the bumper cars, giving the event a unique, communal feel. Following the blessing, the official opening with the popular free rides ensures a fast-paced start to the festivities. The mix of fast-paced rides that get the adrenaline pumping and nostalgic children's carousels makes the fair a destination for all age groups.

An integral part of the programme is Family Day, when reduced prices and special offers attract parents with children in particular. In terms of cuisine, the Ascension Fair offers the entire range of classic fairground delights, from roasted almonds and candy floss to hearty specialities from the grill. As dusk falls, the festival unfolds its full splendour, especially when the traditional fireworks display on Friday evening lights up the night sky above the Lippe and the Lünen skyline.
