Lübeck - Weihnachtsmarkt

The Lübeck Christmas Market transforms the entire old town island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, into the atmospheric ‘Christmas City of the North’. It is not characterised by a single market, but by a diverse ensemble of thematically different areas, all of which benefit from the historic ambience of the city.

The traditional centrepiece is the market around the historic town hall and in Breite Straße. Here, visitors can expect classic market magic with atmospheric lights, countless poinsettias and the scent of roasted almonds, Mutzen (a type of sweet) and mulled wine.

This is followed by the historic Christmas market in the churchyard of St. Mary's Church. This area takes visitors on a journey back to medieval times. Here, craftsmen in historical costumes bustle about, demonstrating forgotten skills and offering their wares for sale. In the evening hours, candles, countless red Herrnhut stars and medieval sounds create a particularly cosy and magical atmosphere.

The Maritime Christmas Market on Koberg, the square in the old seafaring district, adds a maritime Hanseatic touch. The decorations here are inspired by nets, rustic wooden barrels and even a stranded shipwreck, creating a cosy harbour atmosphere. The highlight here is the Ferris wheel, which offers an unforgettable view of Lübeck's old town and harbour.

In addition, there are other special markets, such as the fairy tale forest at St. Mary's Church, where scenes from famous fairy tales are depicted, and various arts and crafts markets in historic churches, such as the airy St. Petri Culture Church or the venerable Holy Spirit Hospital, which offer a relaxed atmosphere far away from the hustle and bustle.

The Lübeck Christmas market thus combines centuries-old tradition (it was first mentioned in documents in 1648) with a variety of themed worlds and the incomparable backdrop of Hanseatic brick Gothic architecture.
