Thanks to its unique backdrop, the Christmas market in the East Frisian ‘Ledastadt’ is one of the most beautiful in north-western Germany. However, the absolute highlight and unique feature of the Leer Christmas market is only revealed at the waterfront: the museum harbour. In the darkness of Advent, it is transformed into a sparkling sea of lights. The historic traditional ships anchored here are decorated with fairy lights that trace the masts and rigging. The gentle rocking of the ships and the reflection of thousands of lights in the dark water create a maritime romance that is rarely found elsewhere. A walk along the waterfront promenade is a must for every visitor during this time.

Another insider tip within the market is the ‘Wiehnacht achter d' Waag’ (Christmas behind the scales). On Advent weekends, this special area around the historic scales building opens its doors. Here, the atmosphere is even more nostalgic and contemplative. Away from the hustle and bustle, artisans present their work in small tents and wooden huts, surrounded by fir trees and atmospheric lighting. It is the ideal place to browse for individual gifts and experience the ‘East Frisian cosiness’ up close.
