Landau an der Isar - Volksfest

The Landau Volksfest in Landau an der Isar is the undisputed ‘fifth season’ of this Lower Bavarian town and boasts a long tradition. The six-day spectacle takes place every year around the feast of Saints Peter and Paul at the end of June, running from Friday to the following Wednesday on the festival grounds on Harburger Straße.

The festivities kick off on the opening Friday with a lively street concert, followed by a magnificent parade featuring around 1,500 people in traditional costume, club members and musicians, who march together from the town hall to the festival grounds, where the Mayor officially opens the festivities by tapping the first barrel. Late in the evening, a spectacular fireworks display will light up the sky over Landau. A sporting yet traditional highlight awaits visitors on Sunday morning, when the traditional folk festival boxing match takes place in the main marquee, accompanied by white sausages and pretzels.

During the week, the festivities continue in a convivial atmosphere on Monday with the ‘Behörden- und Behördenabend’ (Officials’ Evening), whilst Tuesday afternoon is all about families, attracting the youngest guests with reduced prices on the fairground rides and a Punch and Judy show. Culinary highlights of the festival include Bavarian specialities such as Steckerlfisch and Brathendl, which go perfectly with a refreshing festival beer in the main marquee or in Nobby’s beer garden. The musical programme ranges from traditional brass band music to lively party rock in the evenings. A free special city bus service provided by the City of Landau ensures a safe and relaxed journey home every day.
