Description

In the post-war period and well into the 1970s and 80s, boxing booths (formerly often referred to as ‘Sport-Palast’) were a standard feature of every major funfair. Today, the ‘Fight Club’ is Germany’s last travelling boxing booth and thus a unique historical artefact that bridges the gap to the fairground culture of the early 20th century.

The business is masterfully divided into two parts and thrives on the psychology of the crowd.

1. Outside (The Show & Advertising):
On a large outdoor stage, known as the ‘parade’, the stall owner’s employed boxers present themselves to the fairground crowd. They work the punching bags or demonstrate shadow boxing. An eloquent announcer (the ‘Rekommandeur’) whips the crowd into a frenzy over the microphone and scans the audience for potential challengers.
2. The Provocation:
The key is to stir up the egos of the young men in the audience. The ‘Rekommandeur’ loudly promises prize money ranging from €500 to €2,000. The condition: anyone brave enough to step into the ring against one of the professionals and win on points over a set time (usually two rounds of one minute each) or knock out the professional takes the money in cash.
3. Inside (The Sizzling Arena):
As soon as the fights are confirmed, the paying audience streams into the wooden inner tent. Around 400 spectators crowd so tightly around the real boxing ring here that you can literally set your beer down on the edge of the ring. The atmosphere in the smoke-filled, sweltering tent is phenomenal and resembles a cauldron.
