Görlitz - Schlesischer Christkindelmarkt

The Silesian Christmas Market takes place every year in the romantic old town of Görlitz, Germany's easternmost city. It is characterised by its picturesque backdrop, surrounded by the magnificent historic buildings of Upper Lusatia.

What makes this market special is its strong thematic roots in the Christmas message and the traditions of the Silesian region, Upper Lusatia and Bohemia. The traders and craftsmen offer a wide range of handmade and traditional folk art at their stalls, including wood carvings, candles and pewter figures, as well as culinary specialities from the three regions (Silesia, Saxony, Bohemia).

Central elements of the market are the emphasis on the Christmas message, which is expressed in a living nativity scene with animal enclosures, devotions directly at the market and the appearance of the Görlitz Christ Child, who delights children with sweets every day. The Bethlehem courtyard in an inner courtyard provides a contemplative atmosphere, inviting visitors to warm up and listen in a wood workshop, a bakery and a reading tent.

Visitors can enjoy an ice rink on the historic Obermarkt, which is ideal for ice skating and curling. The rich cultural programme on stage includes traditional Advent and Christmas singing, theatre performances and performances by choirs and ensembles from Görlitz and Zgorzelec in Poland, underlining the cross-border atmosphere of the market. During Advent, the entire old town of Görlitz is illuminated by many Herrnhut stars, which add to the enchanting historical atmosphere.
