Freiberg - Freiberger Christmarkt

The Freiberg Christmas Market is known as one of the most traditional and beautiful Christmas markets in Germany and proudly bears the title ‘Original Bergmännisch im Erzgebirge’ (Original Mining Tradition in the Ore Mountains). It takes place annually on the historic Obermarkt in the Saxon mining town of Freiberg, surrounded by picturesque medieval town houses and the town hall.

The entire market experience is closely linked to the rich mining tradition of the silver town. Over 90 lovingly designed wooden huts are not only festively decorated, but also strongly influenced by mining customs in their assortment and decorations. Typical products such as Erzgebirge folk art – including candle arches, incense smokers and figures made of Freiberg pewter – as well as wooden toys and caps are the focus here.

A central element is the tall, festively illuminated Christmas pyramid at the Christmas market. The daily mountain parade of the Freiberg miners and smelters, who march through the festively illuminated streets of the old town in their original uniforms, creates a special atmosphere. Another highlight is the large mountain parade to the Mettenschicht (miners' farewell ceremony) by torchlight.

For younger visitors, there is the ‘Kleine Bergwerkstatt’ (little mining workshop) for crafts, a daily visit from Santa Claus and a varied stage programme. In addition, an ice rink in the nearby Freudenstein Castle invites visitors to enjoy some winter fun. The Christmas market delights with its consistent theme, nostalgic atmosphere and rich cultural programme, which is often complemented by concerts and exhibitions.
