Erfurt - Weihnachtsmarkt

The Erfurt Christmas Market is considered one of the largest and most atmospheric Christmas markets in Germany, transforming the historic old town of Thuringia's capital into a sparkling winter wonderland during Advent. This festive Christmas market stretches from the central cathedral square to the fish market, the Schlösserbrücke bridge and the Anger square, all the way to Willy-Brandt-Platz in front of the main railway station.

The centrepiece is the imposing cathedral square, which is dominated by the architecturally impressive buildings of St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Severus Church, providing a unique backdrop. Amidst this historical splendour are the main attractions: a festively illuminated Christmas tree up to 25 metres high and the original Erzgebirge Christmas pyramid, around 12 metres high, which displays scenes from Erfurt's history and Christmas scenes on five floors. Also central is the Christmas crib with its 14 almost life-size, hand-carved wooden figures and the oversized Advent wreath on the cathedral steps.

More than 200 festively decorated wooden houses line the entire market area and offer everything associated with Advent, from traditional Thuringian handicrafts and Christmas decorations to culinary specialities. Visitors can enjoy the scent of mulled wine, gingerbread, the famous Thuringian bratwurst and the traditional Erfurter Schittchen®, one of the oldest Christmas stollen in Germany. For the youngest guests, there is a children's paradise with a fairy-tale forest, a petting zoo, carousels and a Ferris wheel. The experience is rounded off by a varied musical and cultural programme on the Christmas market stage in front of the cathedral steps. The festive lighting and the variety of offerings make the Erfurt Christmas market an unforgettable experience for around two million visitors every year.
