Ennepetal - Voerder Kirmes

The Voerder Kirmes in the Voerde district of Ennepetal is one of the best-known and most traditional street fairs in the entire region. The festival traditionally takes place on the weekend following Corpus Christi and stretches right through the town centre along Voerder Straße and Lindenstraße, which are transformed into a lively entertainment strip for four days.

A truly unique feature and the undisputed symbol of the event is the so-called Voerder Kirmesbauer. This life-size effigy is traditionally hoisted up during a festive and humorous ceremony at the opening on Friday and watches over the colourful festivities from then on, before being ceremoniously taken down again at the end of the fair. Another unique feature is the remarkably strong involvement of local clubs. Unlike many fairs consisting purely of fairground attractions, the festival in Voerde is largely shaped by sports clubs, shooting clubs and the fire brigade. These groups run their own beer stalls, barbecue stands and small music stages, which gives the fair its special, village-like charm and a very family-friendly atmosphere.

Throughout the weekend, live bands and DJs create a lively party atmosphere at the various club stalls and in the neighbouring pubs. Amidst the classic fairground rides, bumper cars and prize stalls, there is thus plenty of partying right on the street.

Monday finally marks the grand finale of the fair. On this day, the fair attracts particularly large numbers of parents with their children as a family day, with special offers and reduced prices on the rides. As soon as it is completely dark in the evening, the festival weekend comes to a festive close with a grand fireworks display that lights up the district and can be seen from afar.
