Emden - Maritimer Engelkemarkt

The Maritime Angel Market in Emden is a unique Christmas experience deeply rooted in the traditions of this East Frisian seaport town. The heart of the market is the Ratsdelft, the historic harbour where the market takes place right on the waterfront. The most striking feature are the historic ships, festively illuminated and anchored in the harbour basin, lending the entire area a unique, nautical and romantic atmosphere. The lights of the stalls and ships are reflected in the calm water, creating an impressive image of a ‘maritime sea of lights’.

The name of the market comes from the Emden city coat of arms, whose golden virgin eagle is affectionately called ‘Engelke up de Muer’ by the locals. The festive stalls stretch along the harbour to the adjacent city garden, with the illuminated East Frisian State Museum (the historic town hall) providing an atmospheric backdrop. At the centre of the action is a large, richly decorated Christmas pyramid, which serves as a traditional meeting place for mulled wine, grog and East Frisian delicacies.

The vendors offer maritime handicrafts, regional specialities and gifts related to the North Sea. Special attention is paid to the daily children's programme: In the late afternoon, Father Christmas pays a visit to the market to greet the children and hand out small gifts. In recent years, the so-called winter magic balls, heated glass igloos that can be rented on the town hall square and focus on cosy get-togethers, have often provided an additional attraction. The Maritime Angel Market thus offers a successful blend of Frisian tradition, Hanseatic flair and Christmas cosiness.
