Dresden - Augustusmarkt

The Dresden Augustusmarkt, also known as the International Christmas Market on Hauptstraße, offers a modern and international alternative to the traditional Striezelmarkt. It takes place along the magnificent Hauptstraße, which connects the Inner Neustadt with the Golden Rider and offers a view of the baroque old town on the other side of the Elbe.

In contrast to the deep-rooted tradition of the Altmarkt, the Augustusmarkt is characterised by its cosmopolitan flair. It presents itself in an elegant and uniform look, with the stalls housed in cream-coloured or light blue pagoda tents and huts that perfectly match the baroque architecture of Neustadt. A special feature of the market is its colour scheme: the main street is covered by a blue carpet of lights, creating a unique, glittering atmosphere and making the market visible from afar.

The Augustusmarkt focuses on the international diversity of food and crafts. Visitors can discover delicacies from all over the world at the stalls, including Scandinavian specialities, international cheeses and sausages, and handicrafts from various European countries. Traditional Saxon offerings are also represented, but in a modern, cosmopolitan context.

A central attraction is the large, circular ice rink at the Golden Rider, which invites visitors to skate and linger. Other distinctive features include a tall Ferris wheel, which offers spectacular views of the Elbe and Dresden's old town, and a festive, illuminated entrance area.
